DMB Advise:  Damp Proofing

damp.gifDue to the recent weather we’ve had we thought it would be a good opportunity to inform you of all the steps you can take in order to ensure your home remains damp proof throughout these cold winter months.

If not treated efficiently, the issue of damp can be one of the most frequent problems encountered in people’s homes within the UK. Persistent dampness can cause considerable damage to a property if it is left to penetrate into the fabric of a building.  Damp proofing therefore refers to the methods and treatments that can be utilised to prevent water from being absorbed through the walls and floors into the interior of your home.  Understandably it is very important for a property to have effective damp proofing, as it acts as a long-term preventative barrier to decay caused by excess moisture that could possibly weaken and therefore damage the structure of a building.

DPC-Step2.jpgUsually when a property is constructed a preventative damp proof course is built into the walls, just above ground level.  This is often simply known as a DPC and is one of several solutions for damp control within a building.  This is carried out by placing a preventative barrier of slate, bitumen or plastic built into the walls of a property itself.  It is usually about 150mm above ground level and therefore prevents damp rising throughout walls.  Another method of preventing the issue of damp is to utilise damp proof membranes, more commonly known as DPM.  This is a sheet of material (impervious to water) that is often placed beneath the concrete floor of a property, thus stopping moisture.  This in turn stops moisture at groundwater level seeping upwards throughout the concrete base.  By linking the DPC in the walls to the DPM under the floor, it is possible to seal the inside of a building from the damp, wet ground around it.

images.jpegHere at DMB Solutions we can offer advise on this service alongside larger-scale construction projects.  We offer free home improvement enquiry appointments in which one of our architectural designers will come out to your property and briefly survey the area.  From this you will receive an estimated quote with regards to the work you would like completed.  If you would like to enquire with regards to this please do not hesitate to get in touch.  You can either call us on 01273 777459 or alternatively email us at enquiries@dmb-solutions.co.uk and a member of the team will be happy to help!
