A Hip to Gable Loft Conversion

Need more space in your home but don’t want to move home? Do you lack the necessary outdoor space required for an extension on your home? The loft area of your property is often the simplest and least disruptive space to convert to add extra space to a home. Loft conversions are one of the most popular forms of home improvement in the United Kingdom.

A loft conversion (attic conversion) is the process of transforming an empty loft space into a functional room.  Loft conversion can be extremely versatile and can allow you to create bedrooms, a home office, a play room, a gym, or just extra storage space. In general a loft conversion can create more living space in your home while adding value to a home in the process.

Most houses in the UK have a regular, 'hipped' roof with a sloping side like a camping pod. This type of roof means that loft space is often limited. This means it can be difficult to create a loft conversion without extending your property. Plus hipped roofs aren’t always able to support the beams and joists required in a traditional loft conversion. If you require a loft conversion but your property has a 'hipped' roof then a hip to gable loft conversion is the answer.

What is a Hip to Gable Loft Conversion?

A hip end is the sloping end to a properties roof. A gable is the triangular section of wall which stands between two sloping roofs.  A hip to gable loft conversion involves changing the hip end of your property to a flat gable end.

This basically means replacing the sloping side of a properties roof with a wall that fits vertically to the full height of the property, thus extending the ridge line of your home. Hip to Gable Loft Conversion involves removing the roof and then building a gable end in brickwork to match your property.

By changing the hip to a gable, it then opens up extra space in your loft compared to converting your loft with the hip still in place. This extra space created then can allow an ideal space for a staircase and increases standing space within your loft.

However to have a Hip to Gable Loft Conversion the roof of your property must be of sufficient height between the top ridge and the joists of the ceiling below to allow the creation of additional space.

Hip to gable loft conversions are becoming an increasingly popular way to create extra room space Brighton and Sussex properties garden pod. However If the roof of you property does not have the sufficient height required in the first place then a hip to gable loft conversion will not be possible or even cost effective.

Is a Hip to Gable Loft Conversion Suitable?

A hip to gable loft conversions are only available to houses that are detached or semi-detached and obviously have a hipped style roof. Hip to gable loft conversions are also available for many bungalows and chalets too. If your Sussex property is a mid-terrace or doesn’t have a hipped roof structure then this type of loft conversation isn’t viable.

Do I Need Planning Permission for a Hip to Gable Loft Conversion?

Most local authorities in the UK including Brighton and Hove will allow a hip to gable loft conversions to be constructed without having to get planning permission. This has been the case since 2008 when the Growth and Infrastructure Bill was passed into UK law. A typical hip to gable loft extension is usually classified as a ‘permitted development’ so they do not require an application for planning permission.
