What is a hip to gable loft conversion?

Types of Loft ConversionA hip is the sloping side of a property's roof and it limits the amount of available attic space. A hip to gable converts the sloping roof (the hip) into a flat vertical wall (the gable end) built in materials to match your current property. In short, it extends your property outwards and upwards on the sloping side and gives you a significant amount of additional space in your loft.

Is my home suitable for a hip to gable loft conversion?

This type of loft conversion is only suitable for semi-detached or detached houses with hipped roofs.

You can, however, still take advantage of the extra space created by a dormer loft conversion or roof lights.

Will I need planning permission for a hip to gable loft conversion?

Most local authorities in the UK, including Brighton & Hove, will allow a hip to gable loft conversion without planning permission. That's as long the conversion doesn't extend the current size of the property by a certain percentage.

Typical hip to gable loft extensions are usually classified as a 'permitted development' which means they don't usually require planning permission. However, if your conversion does require a planning application DMB will submit all the necessary applications for you as part of the service. We'll also apply for and obtain approval under Building Regulations and a Lawful Development Certificate. The LDC will provide you with written proof that your loft conversion is lawful when you come to sell your house.
